Tamil Nadu aims to raise merchandise exports from the State to $72 billion by end of this fiscal from $59 billion.
The government aims to do this through district-wise targets, fixing a services export target, making Kancheepuram India’s top exporting district, upgrade exporting testing centres under the Export Promotion Mission, supporting first-time exporters, and setting up an Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Facilitation Cell.
Joint effort
A State-Level Workshop held in Chennai on Friday to expand Tamil Nadu’s export opportunities globally reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of India to taking Tamil Nadu’s products to global markets and to strengthening the contribution of the State’s MSMEs, farmers, artisans and exporters to India’s export growth.
The workshop attended by officials from both state and central government departments also highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to take the benefits of Free Trade Agreements to all the districts of Tamil Nadu, to develop new exporters and to further increase Tamil Nadu’s share in global trade., says a government release.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S Keerthana at the workshop emphasised the need to make full use of India’s FTAs to strengthen the global competitiveness of Tamil Nadu’s industries. SHG and MSMEs should diversify export markets and products, and ensure that the benefits of exports reach every district of the State, she added. .
